Struggling Cleveland heads to Tampa Bay for series

Baseball Betting Lines

04/20/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Cleveland Indians will attempt to rebound from a rough three days in the Bronx when the struggling club visits the Tampa Bay Devil Rays tonight in the first of a three-game series.

Cleveland lost all three of its games against the New York Yankees heading into this set, including a devastating late-inning loss in Thursday's finale. The Yankees scored six times in the bottom of the ninth inning and came through with a dramatic 8-6 victory on Alex Rodriguez's three-run homer with two outs.

Tribe closer Joe Borowski entered the final frame with his team holding a 6-2 lead, but the veteran reliever imploded after retiring the first two batters of the inning. He was then rocked for five hits and walked one to cough up the lead.

Victor Martinez gave Cleveland a 5-2 lead with a three-run homer in the top of the seventh, while David Dellucci added a solo blast in the loss. Travis Hafner ended 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Indians.

The loss spoiled a strong outing from Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona, who surrendered just two runs and six hits over the first six innings.

The Indians turn to ace C.C. Sabathia in hopes of getting back on track. The standout lefty has been terrific in the early part of the season, winning each of his first three starts and allowing just five earned runs over 21 innings thus far.

Sabathia was dominant against the Chicago White Sox last Sunday, yielding just one run on five hits and racking up 10 strikeouts over eight innings to lead Cleveland to a 2-1 triumph.

The 26-year-old has also had great success when facing the Devil Rays. In eight career starts against Tampa Bay, Sabathia is 6-1 with a 2.44 earned run average.

The Devil Rays had Thursday off to regroup from a 6-4 home defeat to Baltimore the previous night. Rocco Baldelli had a solo homer and scored twice for Tampa Bay, while Carl Crawford and Josh Paul each collected two hits and an RBI in the setback.

Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir yielded three runs on six hits in four innings, walking four and striking out three, in a no decision. Gary Glover (0-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Edwin Jackson gets the call tonight for the Devil Rays and attempts to rebound from a shaky performance in his last start. The young righty issued five walks in just three innings last Saturday at Minnesota, and also allowed five runs (four earned) to suffer the loss in Tampa's 12-5 defeat.

Jackson also lost his season debut back on April 9 after yielding four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings against Texas.

The 23-year-old has never started against Cleveland, but did throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Tribe on October 1 of last season.

Cleveland has won the last six meetings between these teams and took two of three games from the Rays in their lone visit to Tropicana Field in 2006.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
